Dialogues in Gender and Coastal Aquaculture

In many coastal communities in Southeast Asia and the Western Indian Ocean, aquaculture is an alternative income-generating activity, aimed at improving local economies and enhancing food security. While aquaculture and fisheries management tend to focus on production, which is male-centric, women are important actors in certain types of small scale aquaculture production (shrimps, mussel, seaweed, crab fattening) and they are major participants along aquaculture value-chains. ...

Economic outcomes in small-scale fish trade: The role of gender norms

Both women and men are involved in fish trade around the world. To promote gender equity in the sector, we need to ask the questions: Do women make as much money as do men? If not – why? In an effort to improve livelihood benefits for women and their households, a recent project in Malawi, funded by the Alliance for African Partnership (AAP) Partnerships for Innovative Research in Africa (PIRA) grant, examined the trading roles of women in fisheries both quantitatively and qualitatively. The use of mixed methods is growing in fisheries research as many scholars recognize the complementary v ...

‘Women play a significant role in fisheries, yet lack of attention to gender roles and relations can result in policies or programmes failing to improve livelihoods or reduce vulnerability of fishing communities. The largely ‘invisible’ role of women in small-scale fisheries must be addressed if actions aimed at improving the livelihoods of small-scale fishers and their families are to be successful. ...
